History of Society Foundation
The Saudi Society for Obstetrics and Gynecology was founded following the Saudi Professors and Gynecologists Transitional Constituent Committee meeting. All medical sectors were represented in the Committee including universities, military, Ministry of Health and National Guard hospitals as well as the private sector.
The Society was founded after the universities agreed to establish scientific societies in different disciplines and specializations which will contribute to the advancement of the scientific fields in the Kingdom. His Royal Highness Magid Bin Abdul Aziz (God rest his soul), Prince of Makkah Al Mukrama Region, agreed to take the Society under his full auspices.
Society Activities
The Society Board of Directors can pursue accomplishing its objectives through different activities, specifically:
- Holding conferences, symposia and seminars to discuss issues related to the Society concerns.
- Encouraging conduction of scientific research in this field of specialization and related areas of knowledge and publishing results in refereed journals.
- Establishing a magazine or a scientific periodical or journal for publishing research and studies in relation to the Society concerns.
- Conducting intensive scientific sessions to help doctors and trainees in the field qualify to Fellowship and Ph.D.
- To conduct continuing education activities to those working in the area.
- Developing and supporting high specializations in the field.
International Recognition of the Society
One of the most important accomplishment during the1993 (1413 H) academic year is the international recognition of the Society by FIGO.
Applying to FIGO for international recognition was discussed during one of the Board of Directors meeting. Representatives of the board took the communication responsibility where all needed information and documents were sent accompanied by a list of all Society members.
After some months of communication the Society was announced as internationally recognized in the FIGO general assembly of 1991 (1411 H). The Kingdom was represented in that meeting by Dr. Hassan S. Gamal, Society Secretary-General, and Dr. Maarouf Hag Mohyeldin, coordinator of Society business, and Dr. Husham Arab, Member of Board of Directors and treasurer.
Joining the Asian and Oceania Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology (AOFOG)
The society was recognized and accepted as a member of AOFOG during its annual meeting in 1997.
This recognition is highly valued by the Society as it allows it to internationally contribute to all aspects related to mother and child health through participation in international committees that study and conduct research to improve performance in this specialization.
Joining the Arab Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology
The Arab Association was founded in 1992 and was joined by the Saudi Society afterwards. Individual Society representation was very limited until Dr. Hassan Gamal was appointed as its Board Director as directed by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Fahd Bin Abdul Aziz (God rest his soul).
The first fruitful outcome of such relationship was the great scientific event when the first Association conference was held in Saudi Arabia in connection with the Third International Gulf Conference organized by the Saudi Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2004.
